Introducing The Dita Pompadour ~ A Cosy yet Glamourous Knit

Writer's picture: Tara DeightonTara Deighton

Like many vintage lovers, Dita Von Teese has been a wonderful sartorial inspiration and my new knitting pattern is both inspired by her and named for her.

The Dita Pompadour is a palette cleansing therefore super quick knit, based on 1940's turban style headwear and a pom pom adorned turban that Dita often wears. I really wanted to create something like it for myself but knitted in lovely soft wool.

Dita is so simple to knit, perfect for beginners and quick enough for experienced knitters to make in a myriad of lush colours, with {or without!} fabulous pom poms. My new measure of knitting time is an episode of Poirot and I think you can easily knit Dita in 1, maybe 2 episodes!

I used Rico Essentials Soft Merino Aran which comes in lovely colours and you can find it

And I like to use Trimits Faux Fur Pom poms which I buy from my local haberdashery, Jacobs. They come in an incredible palette of colours and 2 sizes. I always use the large because when it comes to either pom poms or tassels, the bigger the better I say!

Dita is available as a PDF digital download from my shop and you can purchase your copy here!

Whilst I love my Dita with pom poms, she's also lovely without as a more traditional turban style and in my recent YouTube episode, all about the return of my knitting mojo and Dita, I experimented with leaving the knot as a bow ~ I thought it looked rather fab! So you have 3 options for your own Dita. PLUS, she keeps your ears lovely and cosy!

I chit chat about Dita, amongst other things, in this knitting focused episode so grab a tea and have a watch when you have a moment.

Incidentally, Pompadour, a word that has a lovely way of rolling off the tongue, means the following ~

pompadour • \PAHM-puh-dor\ • noun. 1 a : a man's style of hairdressing in which the hair is combed into a high mound in front b : a woman's style of hairdressing in which the hair is brushed into a loose full roll around the face 2 : hair dressed in a pompadour.

But I also had the idea of Madame Du Pompadour and all those rococo wigs in mind too! And ofcourse the Queen of Burlesque, Dita Von Teese!

The Dita Pompadour has been such a joy to work on and bring to life and I know I shall be knitting many more to match all my handmade, thrifted and true vintage outfits. I hope you enjoy her as much as I do and don't forget to let me know if you do! Tag me in your makes at @taradeightonartist!

Happy Knitting My Lovelies!
